“I can take this on if we move one of my current commitments. Which priority should shift?”
When to use it
When your manager can choose between competing commitments and a new task would displace existing work.
Make it work in practice
Name the two commitments that are competing for the same time. For example: “The report needs the rest of today, and this request needs three hours. Which do you want first?”
Make the trade-off visible
Before you promise a new deadline, identify what would move. If the requester cannot change your priorities, check with the person who can.
